Eastern Waterproofing Co., Inc. has been in business since 1976. The front walkway is usually the first concrete on a property to fail. The slab is thin, it sits on grade, and it takes road salt every winter. When a concrete sidewalk cracks, lifts, or flakes apart, the concrete is rarely the problem. What sits under it is. Our concrete sidewalk contractors pour sidewalks, walkways, and slabs, and every project starts with the base, not the finish.
A hairline crack in a concrete sidewalk is ordinary shrinkage. A crack you can fit a pencil into is movement. Once a sealed crack comes back, something below the slab is pushing, and a second repair only treats the symptom. Water gets in, freezes, and widens it every winter until the section breaks up.
When one panel sits higher than the next, the ground under it has moved. In older neighborhoods, the usual causes are tree roots under the slab and frost heave in a sidewalk poured without drainage. A lip over half an inch is a tripping hazard. Uneven surfaces on a walkway used by visitors are as much a liability question as a repair question.
Thin chips peeling off the surface are a sign of spalling, which comes from freeze-thaw pressure inside concrete finished too wet, poured without air entrainment, or salted through its first winter. Once the surface opens, water reaches the aggregate and damage speeds up each season. Light spalling can be resurfaced. Widespread spalling means the top of the slab is gone, and a repair is not worth the cost.
A sidewalk should shed water to one side. Puddles on the surface, or water running back toward the house, mean the slab has settled or was never pitched correctly. Standing water accelerates freeze-thaw damage, and a walkway draining toward a foundation can lead to a wet basement. That link is why a waterproofing company ends up doing so much concrete work.
Plenty of concrete companies pour the flatwork and leave drainage to somebody else. On a walkway, that split causes problems later. Eastern Waterproofing came at it from the other direction. We were built to solve water problems, and our concrete services grew out of that. A walkway is a drainage decision as much as a concrete decision, because a slab pitched the wrong way sends runoff and snowmelt straight at the foundation. When you compare concrete sidewalk contractors, ask where the water goes after the pour. Residential concrete contractors who cannot answer have not looked at the grade.
Every sidewalk installation our concrete contractors quote covers removal and haul-away of the old concrete, excavation to depth, a compacted crushed stone base, forming, the pour, a broom finish for traction, and control joints cut at proper spacing. None of it is optional. The parts you never see again once the concrete is down decide whether the walkway lasts ten years or thirty. On a residential concrete project, quality results come from the sequence, not the finish.
A new run of concrete sidewalk where none exists. It can link a concrete driveway to a side door, a back door to a shed, or serve as a full front walk on a new construction project.
Complete removal and repour where the concrete has broken up past sensible repair. It restores both safety and curb appeal at the front of the property.
Replacement of the failed panels only, matched to the surrounding concrete slabs, where the rest of the run is still sound and sitting level.
Landings and the apron where a concrete driveway meets the walkway, poured as part of the same project so the joints and finish line up.
Connecticut winters run freeze-thaw cycles from November through March. That is the one condition concrete contractors working here have to design around. Every cycle drives water into the slab and the material under it, then expands that water. It is behind nearly all sidewalk failure in the Northeast. Experienced concrete contractors get four things right.
The base comes first. Loam and organic material are stripped out, the subgrade is compacted, then processed stone goes in and is compacted in layers. Stone drains. Soil holds water against the underside of the slab, and water held under concrete in January is what lifts it.
Thickness is specified by use, not by habit. Standard concrete walkways for foot traffic are poured at four inches. Where a sidewalk crosses a residential driveway, or sits anywhere a vehicle can reach it, that figure goes up, and many municipal standards call for six inches or more where vehicles cross. That is a fair indication of what wheel loads do to a thin slab. Local building codes set the floor for a project, not the target.
Control joints are cut so the concrete cracks where we choose. Cement-based materials shrink as they cure, and a joint gives that shrinkage a planned line to follow. Spacing them correctly is the difference between clean panel lines and a random crack through every one.
Curing matters more than most homeowners are told. Concrete keeps gaining strength for weeks after you can walk on it. Use sand rather than salt through the first season, and keep deicers off until the slab has come through a full year.
Estimates are free, written, and given by a company owner rather than a salesperson. Call (860) 875-6646 or ask for a quote online, and we will come and measure the run.
Tell us how long the run is, where it starts and ends, and whether there is existing concrete to remove. That is enough to book a visit and scope your concrete needs.
A company owner handles estimates personally. There are no commissioned salespeople and no franchise structure, so the person measuring your sidewalk is the person accountable for the price, and you get it in writing.
We check grade, drainage, roots, and access before we put a number on paper. If a walkway is pitched back toward the house, we flag it in the estimate, not after the pour.
The crew then removes the old concrete, cuts and compacts the subgrade, sets the stone base, forms the run, pours, broom finishes, cuts the joints, and leaves the site clean. Most of the project happens before any concrete arrives.
Fifty years in business. Eastern Waterproofing has been family-owned and operated since 1976. Alongside the waterproofing and drainage work the company was built on, we operate as full-service concrete contractors handling excavation, footings, foundations, flatwork, and sidewalks. That is extensive experience in one climate.
An in-house crew rather than subcontractors. Our crew averages more than twelve years with the company. The experienced professionals pouring your concrete sidewalk are the same people who will be here if you have a question about it in five years.
A record you can check before you hire. BBB accredited since 1986 with an A+ rating, 4.9 stars across more than 100 Google reviews, and a Connecticut and Massachusetts certified Small Business Enterprise. Fully licensed and insured in both states.
Quality concrete and honest scoping. If the driveway or the rest of the flatwork is fine, we say so instead of quoting a bigger project than the property needs. Customer satisfaction on a walkway is judged years after the crew leaves, not on the day of the pour. Five decades of customer satisfaction came from working that way.
Homeowners comparing concrete contractors often collect three quotes that look alike on price and say nothing about method. Ask about base depth and compaction, slab thickness, cement mix, and joint spacing. Ask whether the concrete contractors quoting the job will pour it themselves or subcontract it. Most concrete companies answer plainly. The ones that do not are the ones to drop. Our concrete services are quoted by a company owner and delivered by our own crew, so the answers you get at the estimate are the answers you get on site.
Ask too what happens to a walkway that does not run straight. Curved runs, tight radii, and custom designs around a mature tree need forms built for the shape. For concrete sidewalk contractors who pour flatwork every week, that is ordinary concrete construction.
Our office is in Manchester, and our concrete crews work across Hartford, Middlesex, New London, Tolland, Windham, New Haven, and Fairfield counties in Connecticut, along with Hampden County in Massachusetts. If you are not sure whether your address falls inside that range, call and ask.
Sidewalk work rarely shows up on its own. If the front walk has failed, the rest of the concrete on the property is usually the same age and heading the same way. We provide these other concrete services for residential properties, from exterior flatwork to interior concrete flooring, and we can fold any of them into one project so your concrete needs run through a single crew.
Most residential walkways take one to two days, with demolition and base preparation on day one. Curing runs separately. You can walk on the new concrete within 24 to 48 hours. Keep vehicles off it longer.
Sometimes. You can seal a single crack in an otherwise level, sound slab. Once panels have heaved, spalling has spread, or a filled crack has reopened, the base under the concrete has moved, and a repair will not hold.
Late April through October is the reliable window for concrete installation in this climate. Concrete placed in cold weather needs protection to cure, and pouring into a hard frost risks permanent weakness. Spring books up quickly, so asking in late winter gives the widest choice of dates for your project.
Ask each of the concrete contractors you speak with to put base depth, compaction method, slab thickness, cement mix, and joint spacing in writing. Those figures explain most of the price gap between two quotes, and most of the difference in quality results. They are also the easiest place for a low bid to cut something you cannot see afterward. The right concrete contractor answers without hedging.
It will, especially in the first winter. Deicing salt drives extra freeze-thaw cycles at the surface and is the usual cause of early pitting. Sand gives traction without attacking the cement paste. After the first year, an occasional light application does far less harm, and a penetrating sealer helps.
Yes, and it often makes sense. A concrete driveway and the front walk are usually the same age. Handling both in one project means one mobilization, one excavation setup, and a consistent finish across the front. The second surface also costs less than it would as a separate job. Not every concrete company will scope a driveway and a walkway together, but there is no technical reason to split them.
Yes. Our concrete services cover footings, foundations, slabs, and concrete flooring for new builds and additions. A construction project can run through one crew from the foundation to the finished walkway rather than several concrete contractors on different schedules.
