Which foundation you end up with is usually decided by the site, not by preference. All three carry a house well when they are built for the conditions underneath.
A full poured basement returns the most usable space per yard of concrete, because the walls enclose a room while doing structural work. It also demands the deepest excavation and the closest attention to drainage, since the entire wall sits below grade against saturated soil. A crawl space uses the same footings and poured walls at reduced height. Less concrete, less excavation, less exposure to groundwater. The space underneath still needs vapor control and a drainage path, or it becomes the wettest part of the house.
A slab on grade skips below-grade walls and sits on thickened edges or frost walls carried past the frost line. It is the least expensive foundation to pour and the least forgiving afterward. Plumbing is cast into it, and base preparation is all that stands between the slab and future cracking. We set the building lines from your plans, then excavate to competent bearing soil. Depth depends on what the excavation exposes on your project, not on an average from a chart. Soft fill, standing water, or ledge changes the plan on the spot. Finding that out with a machine still in the hole costs far less than finding it out after the footing is poured.
The footing supports the entire structure. It is formed, reinforced, and poured below the local frost line, where seasonal freezing cannot lift it. A shallow footing cannot be corrected later, and repairing one after the building is up costs far more than pouring it right.
Forms go up on the cured footing, rebar and any required keyway are set, and the walls are poured in one continuous placement. Poorly sealed openings and cold joints are where water finds its way in years later. Our crews treat form ties, pipe sleeves, and pour joints as part of the waterproofing, not as an afterthought. We patch form tie holes with hydraulic cement and coat the outside face with damp-proofing to protect the wall. A perforated footing drain bedded in clean stone and wrapped in filter fabric is installed before backfill. That drain is what keeps hydrostatic pressure off the wall, and skipping it is the shortcut nobody should take.
The basement or garage slab is poured over compacted stone and a vapor barrier, with reinforcement and control joints placed to spec. Compaction under a slab is as critical as the reinforcement above it. Concrete slabs crack where the base was not packed properly.
