Hairline cracks are normal. Minor surface cracks appear in almost every slab as it cures. Three things determine whether a crack needs work. Is it still moving, is it letting water through, and does one side sit higher than the other?
Concrete floors in Connecticut garages fail for four reasons. Each one changes what has to be done about it.
Backfill around the foundation was never compacted properly, so it keeps consolidating. The slab loses support, sags, and cracks through the middle. Most uneven surfaces in a garage trace back to this.
Snow and salt slush come off your tires, melt, and pool in the low spots. The slab soaks it up. Then an unheated garage drops below freezing overnight, the trapped moisture expands and forces the surface apart from within. That cycle repeats with every thaw, which is why spalling turns up on Connecticut garage floors far more than on slabs in warmer climates.
Salt does not leave with the meltwater. It stays behind in the pores, drives that damage deeper, and corrodes any reinforcement near the surface. The worst of it shows up just inside the door.
A slab poured without a vapor barrier, or over a high water table, never fully dries. That trapped moisture destroys the bond on patches, sealers, and coatings. Because the slab bears against the foundation walls, we check the slab and the walls together. A floor pulling away from the walls is telling you about the ground under the structure.
Every project starts the same way. We measure the slab for level, check crack width and depth, sound the floor for voids, and trace where moisture is getting in. Those readings decide the solution, not a look from the driveway. Depth is the part most people skip. A crack running the full depth of a slab needs a different fix from one stopping in the top half inch.
Drainage comes before concrete. If groundwater or poor grading is feeding the damage, our drainage services correct that first. Otherwise, the work sits on top of an unsolved problem.
For cracks that need strength restored, we use epoxy injection, which bonds the two faces back into one piece. For cracks still moving or leaking, polyurethane injection holds better because it stays flexible rather than going rigid.
For crumbling areas, we cut back to sound concrete along a clean saw line. Then we clean the edges, fill with a bonded repair mortar, and finish flush. We will not feather a thin skim over a weak edge. That patch lets go.
Sometimes a repair will not hold, because the floor has broken into separate sections or the base itself has failed. Then we remove the section and compact the base in lifts to ensure it can carry a new slab. We pour new concrete at the right thickness and slope, with a matching finish and the full cure time industry standards call for. Rushing that step in the process is how a good pour becomes a cracked one.
A garage is one of the highest traffic areas in a house, and the only interior space you drive a car into. The floor takes point loads from tires, jack stands, and dropped tools, plus foot traffic in wet boots. Where that space doubles as a workshop, we specify a thicker, reinforced section. A repair that holds under a parked car is not the best solution, or the most durable one, for a shop floor.
The most common way a concrete repair fails is simple. Somebody covered the damage instead of correcting it.
Epoxy flooring is popular in garages, and a well-installed epoxy flooring system looks excellent on a sound slab. But epoxy coatings bond only to the top layer of the concrete surface. If the slab is still moving, the coating cracks with it. If moisture is pushing up from below, vapor pressure lifts epoxy off in sheets within a season. A sealer has the same limitation. A contractor who coats a moving slab is selling a repaint, not a repair.
Epoxy coatings, decorative finishes, and acid-based stain treatments are finishing services we do not offer. We repair the concrete underneath them. Repairing the slab first is what makes a coating last, and we will tell you honestly whether your floor is ready for one.

Three things move the number. How much floor space is affected. How deep the damage runs. And whether we can reach the work through the garage door or have to excavate to the base. Filling a few stable cracks is a small project. Cutting out a settled bay and pouring fresh concrete is a much bigger project. Usually. Stable cracks, isolated pitting, spalling at the slab edge, a single settled bay, minor surface damage. All repairable, as long as the base underneath is sound. A slab that has lost the ground supporting it is not, because nothing is left to bond a repair to.
Not on its own. Most garage floor cracks are shrinkage cracks and carry no load. Get an inspection when a crack reaches a quarter inch wide, sits unevenly across both faces, widens season to season, or lets water through. At that point, the floor is reporting on the soil beneath it, not just itself.
Nobody checked for movement or moisture before the work started. A patch bonded to a slab that is still shifting, or still wet underneath, will let go inside a year. Testing for both first, then repairing, creates a floor that lasts.
